Once upon a time, you sat down at your kitchen table, you pulled out your notebook, and you wrote.

Your script filled one page, then the next. And you kept going.

That dream project that you’ve been poking at for the past 3 years?

(The full draft of your novel, your poem cycle, that dissertation chapter, that fairy-tale retelling.)

When you open your computer at the end of the month, it’s done. It’s done.

You did it, and that thing that’s been bubbling up inside you is tangible and on the page.

It’s real, and you are a CHAMPION

Sometimes, to make your dream come true, you don't need a fairy godmother.

You need the magical combination of inspiration, accountability, and other writers by your side, daring to make those dreams real.

(Plus TWO fairy godmothers...
and the chance to win $1000 in Carterhaugh credit!!)

Welcome to...

We begin April 1st, 2024!

What is this exactly?

Are you sick of not actually writing?

Done with not completing your project?

Do you know in your bones you have something to say, but you just need a little support to get those words on the page?

You can write with purpose, consistency, and a sense of joy. With sparkle.

Let’s write, together.

Welcome to the Carterhaugh Writers Society, a community created to reignite your creative practice and get you to the finish line of that glorious project that’s been haunting you for way too long.

The Carterhaugh Writers Society will provide the structure and tools you need to finally scream “IT’S DONE!” We’ll help you carve out the space you need, offer real-time strategies for getting unstuck, and build massive momentum through accountability and community.

Are you ready to DO. THE. THING?

Let’s crush this.

Not only are we your fearless(ish) professors for this writing journey - between April 1st and 30th, we’re drafting a book. And, as we write alongside you, we’re taking you behind the scenes to show you exactly how we’re doing it.

NEW BONUS:

We are thrilled to announce that we are adding a NEW BONUS to The Carterhaugh Writers Society for both tiers - an Infernal Salon writing workshop with the incredible C.S.E. Cooney and Carlos Hernandez!

What is an Infernal Salon?

It’s a fun, low-stakes writing workshop, high on community, ix-nay on the essure-pray. Each participant is given a prompt of one or more cards from the very spooky deck that C. S. E. Cooney, Carlos Hernandez, and artist Rebecca Huston invented for their TTRPG “Negocios Infernales.” Once every writer has their prompt, we’ll set a timer for 25 minutes. When the timer dings, the writers who want to will share their infernally-inspired works with all of us. The dynamic “Casa Hernandooney” team has run Infernal Salons at cons, charity events, and libraries, and without fail, much revelry and fun is had by all! If you’re looking for your next story idea or a way to shatter writer’s block, have we got a salon for you!

You can learn more about the game Negocios Infernales here, via a very goofy short home video we made for our Kickstarter, and look at some of the pretty cards and nice things people have said. If you’re just dying to have your own deck, pre-orders for the game are available on Outland Entertainment’s website here.

When is this happening?

Our Infernal Salon will take place on April 13 at 1PM ET!

Who are C.S.E. Cooney and Carlos Hernandez?

C. S. E. Cooney is a two-time World Fantasy Award-winning author, a Rhysling Award-winning poet, a game designer, an audiobook narrator, and the singer-songwriter Brimstone Rhine. Find her on social media via her LinkTree:

https://linktr.ee/csecooney

New York Times Bestseller Carlos Hernandez is the author of the critically acclaimed short story collection The Assimilated Cuban's Guide to Quantum Santeria (Rosarium, 2016), the novel Sal and Gabi Break the Universe (Disney Hyperion, 2019), winner of the 2019 Pura Belpré Award from the American Library Association, and Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe (2020). He's also written dozens of short stories, poems, and works of drama, usually in the SFF mode, which have found homes in magazines such as Uncanny, Lightspeed, Strange Horizons, and many others. Recently, he's written several one-shots for Marvel Comics, both in-print and in digital formats, and just completed a three-story arc for the Strange Academy series. He's also a college professor and a game designer: most recently of Negocios Infernales, which he co-designed with C. S. E. Cooney.

FAQ:

  • "What if I'm ready to get some words on the page, but I don't have an active project at the moment?"

If you’re ready to spend dedicated time writing, then you’re very welcome! We’re also providing an audio guide to help you set an intention for our time together. What goal do you want to achieve? Why? What is reasonable (and exciting!) for you to do in one month?
  • "Will I need to have something that's been outlined or at least roughed out in my head before we start?"

Nope! You will probably make more progress if you do, but that doesn’t matter if your goal is simply to spend time writing instead of finishing a project.

  • "Will this be focused on novel-length fiction work, or can it be used to help with other kinds of writing projects?"

You absolutely do not have to write novel-length fiction. We’ll be writing non-fiction ourselves! Any kind of writing, from a full manuscript to a daily journaling practice to just being present with your writing, is very welcome.
  • "What if I don’t want to speed write? Can I still join?"

Yes! This isn’t NaNoWriMo, and our goal is not to hit a particular word count - it’s to commit to a dedicated writing practice. We’re more interested in creating space and time to write than focusing on speed.

  • "How long do the Zoom co-writing sessions last?"

    An hour.

  • "I live in New Zealand/ California/ Europe, and the co-writing times are midnight/ 3am/ Other Times That Do Not Work For Me. What are my options?"

We wish we could wave our magic wands and make all time zones align for our co-writing, but, alas, that is beyond our power. Our dedicated writing times are 12PM ET on Mondays/ Wednesdays/ Fridays and 7PM ET on Tuesdays. We recommend using a
time zone calculator to check time differences. The Beast tier will also have access to spontaneous writing sessions at additional times.

  • "Will the Weekly Witching Hours be recorded?"

Yes. The witching hours (for live support, spotlight opportunities, Q&As, and more!) are on Thursdays at 7PM ET, and they will be recorded. If the time does not work for you, we encourage you to send in your questions early, and we can answer them for you in real time. Then you can catch the recordings at a more reasonable hour for you.

You'll Love This If...

  • The idea of a writing community lights you up
  • You are beyond ready to get some words on the page
  • You want to reignite your creative practice

This Isn't For You If...

  • You don’t have a goal in mind and aren’t ready to choose one
  • You aren’t willing to try new strategies for getting unstuck and gaining momentum
  • A writing community doesn’t appeal to you

Who's behind this?

Hi! We’re Drs. Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman. Between us, we live with a truly expansive smorgasbord of chronic illness and disabilities, and we don’t get up at 5am to manifest our dreams.

But we are really, really good at having a wild idea, figuring out how to make it happen, and then actually doing the writing until that idea is real and on the page and out in the world.

We’ve dreamt up and then created: two masters theses, two dissertations, a business (you would not believe how much writing that entails), a fully scripted tv series, and more than 150 published articles, reviews, poems, and short stories.

People ask us all the time how we do it.

Let’s be real: even when you have the most brilliant idea, an idea that you are SO EXCITED to bring to life, it can be so hard to get started. It can be even harder to keep going.

Community is the antidote to writer’s block.

Community is writing magic.

We know this firsthand.

Let us share that magic with you.

Open your mind to tales and your heart to magic.

The doors are open...

but only until March 29th at midnight ET!
